happy new year!  we had a great beginning with a trip to disneyworld with dear friends from argentina and a little visit to the beach, lovely!

felíz año!  nosotros lo empezamos bien, con un viaje a disneyworld con amigos queridos de argentina y una visita corta a la playa.  

i finally finished the yoyo runner i was making for my mum so my friend could take it back to her.

al fin terminé el camino de yoyos que le hice a mi mamá para que mi amiga se lo pueda llevar.

those little circles of fabric make me happy, i hope they do the same to her, though i would have prefered to give it to her in person, together with a big hug...this is the best i can do right now.

esos circulitos de tela me hacen felíz y espero que a ella también, aunque me hubiese gustado dárselo en persona con un gran abrazo y un beso...pero esto es lo mejor que puedo hacer ahora.

i hope you have the chance to hug the ones you love this year.

this week...

this week has been (and still is) hard, lots of things to do and dave is out of town.  since i compare myself to others (not a good thing to do) i always feel i am not doing enough, i am not being a good enough mother, i am not eating healthy enough, etc. etc... this is something i constantly work on, acceptance, being kind and compassionate with myself, but i guess when you have done it for so long, the habit is hard to break.  still, i go on and try to remember to be thankful for having another day to enjoy.

esta semana fue (y sigue siendo) difícil, con muchas cosas que hacer y dave en otro estado trabajando.  como me comparo con otros (cosa que no es buena, lo sé), siempre siento que no estoy haciendo lo suficiente, que no soy suficientemente buena madre, que mi dieta no es lo suficientemente sana, etc. etc...es algo con lo que trato de trabajar todo el tiempo, la aceptación, la compasión y la bondad conmigo misma, pero cuando te pegaste palos toda la vida, es difícil cambiar el hábito.  pero igual, sigo y trato de recordar que cada día es un regalo para disfrutar.

one of my judgements of myself as of late is that i haven't made enough things for fiona.  i did manage to make her this little collar a few weeks ago, i have to remind myself of the things that i DO do.

una de mis críticas a mi misma ultimamente es que no le estoy haciendo suficientes cosas a fiona.  hace unas semanas le cosí ese cuellito.  es bueno recordarme a mi misma de las cosas que hago y no criticarme tanto por las que no hago.

for her first day of first grade

to continue the tradiiton that started at the beginning of her school life at 2 years old (look at that baby face!), i made fiona a skirt to wear on the first day of first grade, she absolutely refused a mama-made backpack, she wanted a 'real' one from the store...oh well, at least she liked the skirt.

para seguir con la tradición de hacerle algo para que use el primer día de clases (mirá que cara de bebé!), esta vez le hice una falda, me prohibió que le haga una mochila, quería una 'de verdad' comprada en un negocio.  bueno, no se puede todo, no?

 

the skirt has two layers, i used pink eyelet and this pretty linen that i have been hording for a while.

la falda tiene dos capas, usé borderie y este lino estampado tan lindo que vengo guardando desde hace mucho

and here is the skirt in action. fiona quickly found her favourite place in school, the playground, of course!

y acá esta la falda en acción.  fiona pronto descubrió su lugar preferido en el cole, los juegos, por supuesto!

so, unbelievably fiona started first grade, i will post some photos of that day soon.  but before the big day i made her these tags to put on her backpack and lunchbox (required by the school)

increible pero real:  fiona empezó primer grado, ya voy a subir las fotos, pero antes del gran día, le hice estas 'tags' para poner el la mochila y el bolsito donde lleva la comida (todos los chicos del colegio deben tener su nombre en sus bolsos)

i used some of my favourite japanese fabrics for them, also a grommet and a paper ring.

usé dos de mis telas japonesas favoritas y un aro para papeles.

on the other side i machine embroidered her name and her classroom number, simple and fast.  and i hope she can feel my love every time she sees them hanging from her bags.

en el otro lado bordé su nombre y el número de su aula con la máquina de coser, simple y rápido.  espero que pueda sentir mi amor cada vez que las vé colgando de sus bolsitos.

mother's day

last week was so great, thursday we had tea at fiona's school.  i enjoy mother's day tea every year, but this one was more special because it was our last.  we will keep celebrating, of course, but these teas were always amazing.  the kids sang a song for us, we received necklaces made by them and a bouquet of button flowers too. 

la semana pasada fue tan linda, el jueves tuvimos el té del día de la madre en el cole de fiona.  estos tés del día de la madre son todos especiales, pero este todavía más porque es el último.  por supuesto que vamos a seguir festejando el día de la madre, pero voy a extrañar estos tés con todos los chicos.  nos cantaron canciones, nos regalaron collares hechos por ellos y un ramito de flores hechas con botones.

and of course, we had the mistery mum game (each drew a portrait of their mum that's hanging on the wall and they answered some questions about us that the teacher reads out loud and we have to guess which one is us). 

y, por supuesto, tuvimos el juego de 'adiviná a la mamá' (cada chico hizo un retrato de su mamá - los que ves colgados atrás nuestro - y contestaron preguntas que les hizo la maestra, que ella nos leyó al grupo de mamás y nosotras tuvimos que adivinar cual de todos los dibujos es cada una)

i have bought this fabric a while back, i fell in love with it and knew i had to do something with it for mother's day.  i made fiona this dress.

hace ya un tiempo que compré esta tela, me enamoré y supe que iba a hacer algo con ella para el día de la madre.  a fiona le hice este vestido.

and for me, a pencil skirt.

y, para mi, una pollera/falda recta.

yesterday we went to have some sushi and then a visit to anthropologie.  i am a lucky mum!  i hope you had a wonderful day too!

ayer fuimos a comer a un restaurante japonés y después fuimos a anthropologie.  yo, agradecida a la vida por el regalo de ser madre.

a little peek

just a little peek of what i have been working on, our mother's day matching outfits!  tomorrow we have a mother's day tea at school, so fiona and i will be matching and enjoying each other.

una pequeña muestra de lo que estuve haciendo, la ropita haciendo juego para el día de la madre!  mañana tenemos el té para festejar el día de la madre (que acá es el domingo) en el cole de fiona, asique vamos a celebrar juntas y combinadas!

this little girl is growing so much!  most of her clothes don't fit her anymore, it means that mama better get sewing!

esta chiquita está creciendo tanto!  la ropa casi no le entra, eso quiere decir que mejor que mamá se ponga a coser!

i've had these two fabrics for a while and thought they would look cute together, she requested pockets in all the skirts i make her from now on.

hace tiempo que tengo estas telas y me pareció que iban a quedar lindas juntas, ella pidió que todas las faldas que le haga tengan bolsillo.

it gives me such satisfaction to make her clothes that she likes to wear.  not much compares to the feeling of seeing her go to school with something i made her with my hands and my love.

me dá tanta alegría hacerle ropita que le guste y quiera usar.  no hay muchas cosas que me den tanto orgullo como verla irse al cole con algo que le hice con mis manos y con amor de mamá.

turorial: embroidered cards *** tutorial: tarjetas bordadas

i put together this tutorial on my embroidered tags.  you will need a little imagination, some patience and the following supplies:

aca va el tutorial para hacer mis tarjetitas bordadas.  vas a necesitar un poco de imaginación, otro poquito de paciencia y estos materiales:

• tags/tarjetitas
• stamp/sello
• pencil/lápiz
• metallic emboidery floss/hilo para bordar metálico
• scissors (not shown in this pic)/tijera
• embroidery needle/aguja

here we go:

acá vamos:

stamp the tag.  of course, you can use any stamp you have and make your own design.

sellá la tarjetita.  por supuesto, podés usar los sellos que tengas para crear tu propio diseño.

draw the design that you would like to embroider.  or you can use part of the stamp as a guide to your embroidery, like here.

dibujá lo que quieras bordar.  o, podés usar parte del sello como guía para el bordado, como estas.

make little holes around the design where the thread is going to go.  i used a needle.

hacé agujeritos en el diseño donde va a ir el hilo.  yo usé una aguja.

embroider.  make a knot on the thread and start at the back of the tag, being careful because metallic thread is a little bit trickier than regular embroidery thread, it gets tangled more easily, always check the back.

a bordar.  hacé un nudo en el hilo y empezá por la parte de atrás de la tarjeta, con cuidado porque el hilo metálico se enrieda más facilmente que los otros, siempre fijate en la parte de atrás, que esté prolija.

finish the embroidery and make a knot (also in the back).  you can add ribbon to the tag and another blank tag in the back to write a message.

terminá el bordado con un nudo (en la parte de atrás).  le podés agregar una cinta y otra tarjetita en blanco para escribir un mensaje.

i think they would look cute attached to a present or by themselves as unique christmas cards.  if you don't feel like making them though, you can buy them at my store.

me parece que quedarían muy lindas como parte del envoltorio de un regalo, o solas, como tarjetas de navidad originales.  si no tenés ganas de hacerlas, las podés comprar en mi tienda.
